After playing warrior king Maharana Pratap in his last television outing (Bharat Ka Veer Putra -- Maharana Pratap) -- Ssharad Malhotra is all set to play the quintessential lover boy now.
His latest daily soap Kasam: Tere Pyar Ki is an intense tale of love -- that of the janam-janmantar kind -- which has him paired opposite Kratika Sengar. With the Ekta Kapoor show being launched tomorrow, SpotboyE catches up with the actor for a quick chat about love, life and much more. Excerpts:
After playing a historical character like Maharana Pratap, how does it feel being part of a love story?
In Kasam, I play Rishi Bedi, a modern urban male. The transformation from a historical character to a modern guy was tough -- I had to work on my body. I play a boxer and so, had to look leaner and lose weight. Even in terms of characteristics, the hairstyle, my clothes… everything is different.

You play a boxer?
Yes, but only to impress girls. Rishi is a flirt in a harmless way. He keeps falling in love with a different girl every minute. He is basically a happy-go-lucky kind of guy who doesn’t believe in love.
Do you believe in love?
All of us out here believe in love. If you don’t have love in your life, it becomes meaningless. As Ssharad Malhotra, I believe in love. But as Rishi Bedi, I do not believe in love. So, making the character convincing was a challenge for me.
Do you have someone special in your life?
I am loving my life at the moment. With Kasam, I am looking for a good show in terms of content. My career is going good and as far as my personal life is concerned, I am just chilling.
Tell us about your producer, Ekta Kapoor...
Ekta has never actually gone wrong with the K-factor. And this time, she is back with a major, epic love saga. I am working with Balaji Telefilms and Colors for the first time and it’s been a good experience so far. It’s been long since television has seen a story where love is beyond life and death.
Go on...
The show is about Tanu (Kratika) who believes in love and Rishi who is a flirt. But slowly, they fall in love. Ever since the promos went on air, I have been receiving some great feedback.

Your show is replacing Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi. Will you and Kratika be able to match Ranveer-Ishani’s (Shakti Arora and Radhika Madan) chemistry?
Kratika and I are very comfortable working with each other. She is a spontaneous actress and a great friend. We will try our best to convince viewers that Rishi and Tanu are made for each other.

With too many shows around, they have a short shelf life now...
As of my show, it’s a janam-janmantar wala love story, which people don’t get to see much in today’s times. The treatment is very unique and I am looking forward to it.
